Why choosing an Affiliated School matters for your child?

10 August 2025 - Posted in Parents Guide by

When it comes to your child’s education, choosing the right school is one of the most crucial decisions you’ll ever make. Among the many factors to consider, school affiliation with a recognised education board (State or Central) is often overlooked by parents — yet it plays a decisive role in shaping a child’s academic journey.

What Does "Affiliated School" Mean?

An affiliated school is legally sanctioned by a government-authorised education board, e.g.:

  • Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE): A national board.
  • Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE): Another national board.
  • State Education Boards: Such as the Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE).

Affiliation ensures conformity by the school to the academic structure, syllabus, and quality standards prescribed by the board, offering the students standardised and accepted education.

Why Is Affiliation Important?

1. Recognised Certification: A mark sheet or certificate that is recognised by the board will be valid for a higher study and competitive exams in India and overseas. Your child's academic credentials may not be accepted by other schools if not affiliated.

2. Standardised Curriculum: An affiliated school has a curriculum as prescribed by its concerned board, and students receive the proper exposure to subjects, development of skills, and evaluation methods that are accepted on a national level. Many franchise based schools are not affiliated with any board and hence their curriculum has anomalies for ex insufficient focus on regional subjects such as Hindi.

3. Trained and Eligible Teachers: Affiliated schools must appoint trained teachers according to board standards, maintaining quality education and proper assessment of the students.

4. Formal Assessment System: Board-affiliated schools carry out evaluation in a formal, unbiased, and transparent manner — keeping the students assessed on transparent academic criteria.

5. Exposure to Co-Curricular & Board-Approved Activities: From Olympiads to inter-school events, affiliated schools have preference in attending board-approved events that develop skills in students beyond academics.

How to Check If a School Is Affiliated?

Parents often simply believe verbal assurances — but checking affiliation is simple and necessary. Irrespective of the board of affiliation, all schools have a state board portal code and a UDISE code.

  1. Get the school's state board portal code (known as PSP code in Rajasthan) and UDISE code from the school itself and search for the school at respective State's Education Portal.
  2. In case you want to check school's affiliation without visiting the school, you can search the school by its location or name as well.
  3. Also search the school on UDISE Portal with its UDISE code or its location or its name etc.

Tips:

  1. When searching by name or location, search by exact name and location otherwise the school may not be found.

  2. Affiliation is location specific. If a franchisee school is affiliated in one location, it does not mean that other franchise schools in different locations are also affiliated.
